Words,
Hundreds and hundreds of them
Scattered beneath my tongue
Waiting to be ordered
With rhythm and sense
For it must sound good to you.
Verses after verses,
Words after words
Beautiful but incomplete.
Expressing the same old thoughts
Again and again, with the same old heart.
Look under the skin
Nothing here, makes sense.
Not the words, not the verse,
No part of it is attractive
None of it is true.
Life is not as rhythmic
As you’d express it.
Verses after verses
Words after words
A beautiful imagination.
But Nothing real.
I’ve written a couple of poetic pieces too,
All of them, I know are lies
Covered in sugar water paste.
Poetry – Is good vocabulary and proper rhyme all that it takes?
I know that the answer is “No”. I had written this poem long ago, when I didn’t know about free verse and Spoken word poetry.
Share your thoughts : ) It’s always nice to read your comments ❤️
This is indeed a very good poem.
And yes the answer is no,😂
Poetry for me is a realm beyond everything we can imagine.

This has nothing to do with your poem, but rather a title in your Goodreads bar: “Can Love Happen Twice? by Ravinder Singh”. So I’m curious. Is it common in India to think love only happens once? It’s pretty common here in America.
LikeLiked by 2 people
I don’t think it’s that common. There are a lot of people who think love can happen twice. In fact that book is also based on the idea that love can happen twice.
There are a lot of Indian movies though, that suggest that love is a one time thing.
Everyone has different perspectives about love and I cannot really say what the entire nation thinks about it 🙂

Maybe as many as a quarter of the people I talk with here about love tell me it’s a once in a lifetime thing. You find a “soulmate” they say. You only have one. If you lose them you’re screwed. You don’t get another shot at “true love”.
The idea can be traced back 2,400 years to the ancient Greek philosopher, Plato

Maybe it is true then! But I personally don’t believe that love can happen only once. No. That isn’t what I think. I think love can happen more than once.
Also, I don’t believe in soulmates. How often do people actually find their soulmates? Don’t we find a person and make them our soulmate instead of waiting for the one?
Love is a confusing thing. I don’t like talking about it.

I think it’s nonsense that we only have one love in our lives. I’ve had many. But if you don’t like talking about it then we won’t. No worries.

When I saw your title, “Words After Words”, I was so hoping for a precocious essay on Wittgenstien’s Tractatus. Perhaps you can imagine the bitter depths of my disappointment to discover you had merely written another one of your insufferably well- crafted, thoughtful, and thought-provoking poems. Tsk. Tsk. Tsk.
I’ll survive my shock, but barely.
Robert Bly was once the poetry critic for The New Yorker Magazine. I have a collection of his columns. One thing Bly does incredibly well is insist that poems speak truths. Honest truths in the sense that the poet him or her self cannot really doubt what he or she is saying.
So, for instance, if I say, “Anu is an honest person”, then according to Bly that is only acceptable if I myself cannot personally find any reason to doubt what I claim to others to be true about Anu.
Does that make any sense?

Hmmm…. I rarely have to deal with complicated comments, like this one right here.
It took me some time but I think I know if this makes sense or not.
Firstly, I’m sorry to disappoint you. I am really bad at essays. So, I think it was a bad idea to expect that this was an essay on Wittgenstein’s Tractatus. But thank you for the kind compliment that you added at the end.
I hope you won’t be disappointed when I say that I didn’t know about Robert Bly until now. But I think I partially agree with him. Poetry speaks the truth but not always. Poems can be fictional, they can have hidden lies. But that’s just what I think.
I doubt what I write sometimes.
Oh but… I am an honest person most of the times.
So, I guess it makes sense.
If you cannot find a reason to doubt my honesty, isn’t your statement acceptable?
Robert Bly seems to be an interesting person. I will find out more about him!

It sounds like my sense of humor didn’t come through my words. I was trying to joke about your writing an essay. My fault that I didn’t make that clear. Sorry about that.
Bly is a good poet. But he is an even better poetry critic. The best I’ve ever read. He retired some years ago, though. I’m not entirely sure he’s still alive.
Basically, Bly was a positive critic, He usually didn’t point out weaknesses so much as he pointed out strengths. And wrote about poetry in a way that showed how important it can be to the world
I agree with you that poetry does not always need to be truthful. A lot of good poems are fanciful, etc. I think Bly was only talking about those poems that claim to be truthful. Not the ones that make no such claims.

I am bad at understanding “humour”, sometimes.
I see. He must’ve been talking about poetry that is honest.
You seem to be a very kind person. It was nice knowing about such an interesting poet. I will definitely read his poems asap!
Thank you so much for stopping by. It means a lot.
